Hiking with kids: Schmuggler & Säumer in Engelberg

14 Aug 2019

Taking advantage of the last days of the summer holidays, together with a little friend, we went to visit the recently inaugurated(July21) children’s trail”On the tracks of Schmuggler & Säumer,” in the famous Engelberg region, at Trübsee station, located on Mount Titlis.

The trail around the lake is3.5 km long and can be easily done in about one hour ; with children, however, you should double or triple the time required to walk around because of the many activities along the trail.

THE TRAIL

The trail is very easy and fun, just follow the instructions on the map you get at the cable car station in Engelberg or directly at Trübsee station.

The great adventure is to find some goods that were hidden around the lake by the smuggler Engelbert and his mule Schmuggli. And, of course, like every treasure hunt, there is a reward waiting for the kids at the end.

There are a total of six interactive stations scattered around the lake and each one will have you search for an object described on the map.

Next to this object you will find a perforator to punch the map in the corresponding location.

The first station – Here you will find fun surprises and the first word of the puzzle.

The second station – tells a legend of a very strong monk who lived in the region and you have to prove that you are as strong as he was by doing the Parcours and finding out the second word of the puzzle.

The third station –  lets you play and learn how cable cars and funiculars work.

The fourth station – more than halfway into the trail –  will challenge you to find a gold nugget around the lake, but first you have to find the other word for the puzzle.

On the way to the second to last station, we find a hammock for a short break.

This stop is at one of the most beautiful playgrounds we have ever seen in Switzerland – the Schmuggler playground.

The sixth station – it’s a huge picnic area with barbecues, tables and beautiful benches to take a rest.

At the end of the trail you will complete the puzzle and get a word; if you figure out the right word, your kid gets a beautiful gift that he/she can choose from the map exchange points, in this case the restaurant, the info desk in Trübsee or the station cashier in Engelberg.

HOW TO GET THERE

By public transit

By public transit, the best connection is to travel from Lucerne to Engelberg, then take the bus to Titlis station or walk for about 10minutes.

The family adventure begins with the famous Globi Express, which runs from Lucerne to Engelberg. This train has a car for families, beautifully decorated with Globi motifs. If you don’t know Globi, take a look at this post here.

Besides the decoration, you will find some books telling some of the great adventures of Globi, just pick them up and read.

You can also answer a quiz in a brochure that you’ll find at the front door of the car, pay attention to the route, answer the questions and at the end of the trip, turn in the answers for a little sack of gummy bears, biscuits and color pencils at the train station in Engelberg.

By car

There is a parking lot beside the cable car station, the address is Rohrstrasse 23 in Engelberg.

Below are the distances to from some nearby cities:

Zurich – 85km – 1h7

Bern – 145km – 1h46

Geneva – 298km – 3h18

Children: CHF 16 (6 to 16 years old) round trip, free of charge for children over 6 with a valid Swiss Juniorkarte.

Other useful information

  • The trail is open from May to October;
  • It is accessible with a stroller;
  • It has picnic areas with tables, barbecues and wood is available at barbecues;
  • There are bathrooms along the trail;
  • You will find a restaurant along the trail and one at the cable car station.

 One of the best children’s trails we’ve ever done, the playground is beautiful and huge and at the end of the trail guarantees fun for the children. And for those who haven’t had the opportunity to visit Mount Titlis, you can combine the two tours and enjoy a beautiful day.

I hope you like it!
